"Time stops. He's filling empty space with the substance of our lives, confessions of his bellybottom strain, remembrance of ideas, rehashes of old blowing. he has to blow across bridges and come back and do it with such infinite feeling soul-exploratory for the tune of the moment that everybody knows it's not the tune that counts, but 'IT--' Dean could go no further; he was sweating telling about it."
From this point of inspiration (or should I say perspiration?), I want you to leap, creatively, into the music of your life, creating a soundtrack for your life. A play list, 5-10 songs in length. Not the actual music files, just a list of the songs that you would want to play or listen to as you travel, as you move around campus. As you live. So many of us now move about campus constantly plugged in to our iPods. We remove them only reluctantly and even have conversations while the music continues to play.
Once you've created your play list, I'd like you to talk, in detail, about 3 of the songs. Talk about the lyrics, quote the lyrics, tell us why they speak to you, why they matter to you, what they say to you. Why does this song or piece of music move you? In what way? "It's got mad beats" might be a true statement, but I want a little bit more. Dig deeper! "Dig IT!"

In no order here is my playlist:
1. Just Can’t Wait to be King - Lion King
2. Room With a View - Brother Ali
3. Make It Rain - Fat Joe
4. Play With Bootsy - Bootsy Collins
5. Good Life - Kanye West
6. It’s Going Down - Yung Joc
7. Bullet - Rhymefest
8. Try - Sweatshop Union
9. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye
10. Crank That - Soulja Boy
The first song I’m writing about is "Just Can’t Wait to be King". I like this song very much because when I was really young I used to watch the lion king all the time and this was my favorite song in the movie because of all the colors and animals dancing in this scene.
The second song is "Play With Bootsy". I first heard this song the day I moved to Switzerland when I was with my older brother. My brother and I thought the whole song was hysterical especially when he says, “And remember, just because u got wings, don’t mean u can fly.” This song reminds of the good times that I had with my brother in Switzerland.
And the last song is "Try". I like this song because of its “mad beats” and its lyrics. I feel like I can relate to lyrics cause I’m trying hard in school but it just feels like I just keep going in circles and I’m not getting anywhere.
1.Red Dirt Road- Brooks & Dunn
2.Wide Open Spaces- Dixie Chicks
3.Goodbye Yellow Brick Road- Elton John
4.Lights- Jorney
5.Stand- Rascal Flatts
6.Walk Away- Ben Harper
7.Love Me If You Can- Toby Keith
8.Fortunate Fool- Jack Johnson
9.Family Business- Kanye West
10.Wasting Time- Jack Johnson
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John reminds me that you don't have to live up to anybody else's expectations but your own. You create yourself.
"Wasting Time" by Jack Johnson is nothing but the truth. We all waste time thinking we know everything about everyone when, we should be worrying about ourselves and finding our true identity. Just like Jack sings in the song..."But everybody thinks
That everybody knows About everybody else Now nobody knows Anything about themselves Cause their all worried about everybody else."
"Stand" by the Rascal Flatts is an inspirational song to me because, the chorus reminds me that no matter what you'll get back up and try again. "Cause when push comes to shove You taste what you're made of You might bend, till you break Cause its all you can take
On your knees you look up Decide you've had enough You get mad you get strong Wipe your hands shake it off Then you Stand."
1. I won't Back Down- Tom Petty
2. Badfish- Sublime
3. Start Me up- Rolling Stones
4. Jamming- Bob Marley
5. Come Monday- Jimmy Buffett
6. Flying Horses- Dispatch
7. Love and Memories- O.A.R.
8. Berry's Dream- The Old Silver Band
9. Never Wanted Nothin More- Kenney Chesney
10. Belief- John Mayor
the reason I chose the seveth song on my list was because Love and Memories is what people live by. I know the memories that I have of my friends from home and just in general when the song comes on I think about all the goodtimes I have had with people. I chose the eighth song on my list called Berry's Dream beause it is actually written by a band in my hometown and it is all about on the Cape during the summer and it just reminds me of friends and family. I chose the fourth song on my list Jamming becasue it is just a chill song that makes my stress go away when I listen to it and it calms me down.
my playlist:
Free Bird-Lynyrd Skynyrd
I Feel Home- O.A.R.
Read my Mind- The Killers
Here's to You- O.A.R.
Where the Hood At- DMX
How's It Going to Be- Third Eye Blind
That was a Crazy Game of Poker(LIVE) 34th and 8th- O.A.R
I am writing about "Where the Hood At." The song is alright but what I like most about it is when i listen to it it reminds me of good times with my hockey team a couple years ago. We were playing in a regional tourney and we played horrible the first game and knew we could do better. Somehow we just ended up listening to this song before and after every game and everyone would sing it. And whenever im with my friends who were on that team and that song comes on we all laugh and talk about that time.
The second song is "How's it Going to be." Its not just this song from TEB that I like. I like all the songs from this CD. I still listen to them all to this day. I like it because it reminds me of a vacation i had with my family and my aunt and uncle. We had a 5 hour road trip and we just were cruising down the road listening to this CD the whole time.
The last song is "Read my Mind." My friends and I were driving to one of my friends lakehouse one day and this song came on from one of their ipods and i liked it from the start. we literally listened to the whole ride trying to figure out what the guy is saying. It doesn't have "mad beats" but "mad lyrics." Its very catchy and it reminds me of driving with my buddies and a girl i used to know.
1. Piano Man – Billy Joel
2. One – Three dog night
3. the ghetto – One Be Lo
4. Me and Julio Down by the school yard – Simon and Garfunkel
5. Blues for Pablo – Miles Davis
6. Up on the roof - the Drifters
7. Killing me softly – The Fugees
8. You’re the best around – Joe Espisito
9. Tired of being alone – Al Green
10. Dust in the wind – Kansas
First off, The Piano Man, is a significant part of my life probably for the fact that my mother put headphones over her belly and blasted it while I was just a fetus. Also because I often feel that I’m just singing songs about the people around me.
Then there is The Ghetto, which hits close to home as I would often see these things growing up in a ghetto. Seeing drug deals and prostitution, and the everyday struggle to survive and provide.
Then I really like, You’re the best around, because sometimes I think I am the best around. As if I had the heart of a champion, and most importantly I heard this song in the Karate kid and that was an awesome movie.
Robby’s Playlist
1.) Bob Marley- Get up, Stand up
2.) Ziggy Marley – true to myself
3.) Radio Head – Karma Police
4.) Stick Figure- Walk of Life
5.) Bob Marley-Legalize it
6.) Sublime- New Realization
7.) Rebelution- Courage to Grow
8.) Gary Jules- Mad World
9.) Johnny Cash- Walk the Line
10.) Half Pint – Greetings
The first song I chose was Ziggy Marley, True to Myself. This song talks about the excitement each new day may bring. He states, “Life has come long a way since yesterday, and it’s not the same thing over again..” Every day I wake I won’t know what to expect and what I will get out of it. This song inspires me to keep pushing through and to stay “true to myself.”
The second song I chose was Walk of Life by Stick Figure. This song was written and composed entirely by my brother in his first CD that was eventually signed. He overcame many obstacles in reaching this goal and producing this song, on his way to a professional music career. “Catch me on a bad day, I won’t cry, even if the stars fall from the sky” I have always looked up to my brother and find this song inspiring to me.
The third song I chose was Greetings written by Half Pint. In this reggae song, Half Pint states “You live the life you love; you love the life you leave.” I find to this be very true and important in a person’s life as you need to appreciate your own life in order to be happy and succeed. This song also has a good rhythm.
The top ten songs I would listen to would go like this:
1. Don't Worry, Be Happy
-Bob Marley
2. The Kill - 30 Seconds to Mars
3. Breathing - Yellowcard
4. The Deep End - Crossfade
5. Good Riddance(Time of Your Life)
-Green Day
6. With or Without You - U2
7. Home - Daughtry
8. Down - Earshot
9. Hey There Delilah
-Plaine White T's
10. Get Through This - Art of Dying
The first song I while talk about is "Get Through This". This song inspires me to work harder. The song says that "if I can get through this, I can get through anything".
The second song that really moves me is "The Deep End". The song is about how hard is to hold on "when you are reaching for so much more". It coincides with school and how hard it is to keep getting good grades. Plus its got mad beats
The last song I will talk about is
"Breathing". This is my favorite song out of all the others. I first heard this song when I was about 13. I wasn't into music until I heard this song. I kept singing it over and over in my mind. It was the beginning of listening to music.
1. A Child of Water - Radmilla Cody
2. Thank You - Ashanti
3. Lose Yourself - Eminem
4. I believe - Fantasia
5. Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson
6. Because of You - Kelly Clarkson
7. Girl Put Your Records On - Corrine Bailey-Rae
8. Harmonized Peyote Song - Verdall Primeaux and Johnny Mike
9. Spirit of a Woman - Radmilla Cody
10. Lean on Me - Al Green
I chose "A Child of Water" by Radmilla Cody, a navajo singer, because this song defines who I am in my culture. I am of the Big Water Clan which makes me related to water, "I am the child of sacred water;" so I have a strong connection with it, I respect it and it respects me. This song is what I believe, it describes my culture because we believe people are one with nature rather than being superior. Without nature (water, animals, etc) we would have no means of survival. Without the stars, the moon, the sun, sunset, and dawn we would have no life cycle; no beauty to life.
I chose "Thank You" by Ashanti because this song reminds me of the three most important people in my life: my mom, my former track coach/teacher and one of my best friends, and his fiance. I appreciate these three people so much, I thank God everyday for having them be a part of my life. They are there for me when no one else is, they understand me, and care for me. While I am away from home this song reminds me of them; I dedicate this song to them.
I chose "Lose Yourself" by Eminem because this song reminds me of track season and running hurdles. Running track, especially hurdles, is my passion and this song pumps me up before my races. I ALWAYS and ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO listen to this song before a 300 meter hurdle race. I just love the beat, it gets my adrenaline rushing. I also love the lyrics, they make me stop and think about life, the opportunities it presents, and the chance to seize them, "Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment whould you capture it or just let it slip?" It is just a great song.

2. In The End Linkin Park
3. Easier To Run Linkin Park
4. Breakaway Kelly Clarkson
5. How Does It Feel Avril Lavigne
6. Life Is Cool Sweetbox

8. Track Jay Chou
9. I was fifteen Yesterday Tong’en
10. Notturno Jay Chou
I really want to talk about the song “Breakaway”. The first time I attracted to it was right before I came to the United States. “..Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but Gotta keep moving on, moving on Fly away, breakaway I'll spread my wings And I'll learn how to fly Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye I gotta take a risk Take a chance Make a change And breakaway…” I was breaking away with my society, with my world, with everything, to go to a strange place. I felt the pain saying goodbye to the familiar people, and facing my unknown future. I was an investment, and it takes risks to invest something. The Only thing that clear to me was I had to move forward, insist my “breakaway”, and make a completely use out of it. Even now when I listen to this song, I can feel the tears hesitating within my orbits.
The second song I want to talk about is “How Does It Feel”. The rhythm already creates the background of the song, suddenly turning my emotion into a ruminative condition. “…I am small and the world is big All around me is fast moving Surrounded by so many things…” Compare with the enormous world, I am so tiny that any of my contribution can be neglected. The fast moving people seem to be irrelevant to me. I watch them rapidly passing by, but stay in one spot feeling numb. There are so many things going on, but there are so many things that I cannot achieve.
I always tell myself my life is like a movie. There have been so many dramatic things which seem so unreal to me. The song “Easier to Run” reveals “…Something has been taken from deep inside of me The secret I've kept locked away no one can ever see Wounds so deep they never show they never go away Like moving pictures in my head for years and years they've played…” I hate it when my laptop does slideshows of my pictures with this song. It seems my days are sliding away like those pictures with the vivid memories. I am getting old, inevitably. With the rocking rhyme, I am running forward without turning around on the road of my life.
1. The People - Common
2. Hate it or Love it - 50 Cent f/ The Game
3. Youth of the Nation - P.O.D
4. For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
5. Where'd You Go - Fort Minor
6. Dreams - The Game
7. Window Shopper - 50 Cent
8. Butterfly - CrazyTown
9. Bubbly - Colbie Caillat
10. Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
The first song I'm going to write about is "The People" by Common. The first time I saw the music video, I saw Common going through the streets of Chicago trying to help all different types of people with their lives. Everytime I'm on the road driving and I pass cities and towns, I'm constantly seeing dfferent people doing different things as they go on with their lives.
The second song I chose is "Youth of the Nation" by POD. First off, if you ever seen the music video, it shows a group of people who go around the country on one big road trip to discover their self identity. Everytime I'm on the road driving, especially out west I feel like I'm one of the people driving in the video looking at the various things of interest.
The last song I chose was "Hate it or Love it" by 50 Cent. This song is probaly the most played song on my playlist. This song has that special beat that gets me pumped up before a game, test anything. When I drive and I hear this song, this song pumps me up to drive that long distance to wherever I have to go.
In no specific order..
1.I Feel Home-O.A.R.
2.Changes-Tupac
3.Midnight Rider-Allman Brothers
4.Beast and Dragon,Adored-Spoon
5.Shake-Ying Yang Twins
6.Tub Thumpers-Chumbawumba
7.You're My Best Friend-Queen
8.Talking S**t About a Pretty Sunset-Modest Mouse
9.Crooked Teeth-Death Cab for Cutie
10.With a Little Help from my Friends-The Beatles
I chose the song "I Feel Home" by O.A.R. because my best friends from home are invaluable to me and it reminds me of the good times when we were all still together. The lyrics pretty much sum up my feelings in a nutshell.. "cause to me throughout eternity there's somewhere where you're welcome to go I said it's something free that means a lot to me when I'm with my friends I feel home."
Another pick is "Changes" by Tupac. This song never fails to bring me back to the 90's. I think of my oldest brother and me as a child, looking up to him and his friends, imptiently waiting to be in high school someday like him. The lyrics on top of that are sending out a strong message that I even knew as a child was good advice.
"The Beast and Dragon, Adored" by Spoon reminds me of a specific time period in my life.A sort of mentality I was living, certain friends who were living in it with me and a mindset which I find myself returning to every now and again. And "I got to believe it come from rock and roll".
